Andy Partridge – I Gave My Suitcase Away
I know I’ve heard the name, but I can’t quite place him. A simple, direct and seemingly heartfelt effort.
The Raconteurs – Steady, As She Goes (Acoustic Version)
Hearing the acoustic version, I realized the similarity to Joe Jackson’s “Is She Really Going Out with Him” – it’s also Cake-like in its unpolished form. They’re clearly having fun here and it’s “catchy.” Nice vocal interplay – a little unsteady goes a long way.
[I think there’s gotta be a MyFive round of alternate versions of songs.]
“Gave My Suitcase” / Andy P. A little ode to domesticity; reminds me in theme and some turns of phrase of Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You.” An(d)ything that starts with vibes, then has a vibe solo to boot, is already on my good side. Lovely, innit?
“Steady as She Goes” / Raconteurs. Don’t know much about this band (although at a friend’s urging I have tickets to see them later this summer). Hence I do not know the electrified track of which this is the acoustic version. Catchy little tune, sounds a little Beatle-y to my ears, like a song left over from “Help!” that later became a “Let It Be” outtake. Liked the overall rough feel, from the loose harmonies to the strumming.
Andy- This isna sweet little nugget and so-Andy. Simple idea brilliantly executed. Jaunty rhythm. Interesting take on the mundane. He has his little unexpected chordal ideas that resolve nicely. Lyrics are effortless and crafted (“A saint too poor for sin”). Never heard this one before. Sounds like it belongs on side 2 of Nonesuch. Base artist is almost too obvious- Gwar.
Ranconteurs- Nice acoustic take on their electric song. I have a weird relationship with Jack White. I really want to totally vibe with him but I dont. I like some of his White Stripe stuff and some of his solo work (Blunderbuss) but I cant go all in. Just as I’m about to, I get bored. Similarly, just as I start to dismiss him, he does something interesting. I respect his dedication to the art.
“I Gave My Suitcase Away” by Andy Partridge: Love the chord progression change-ups in this one; keeps this song sparkling along nicely (a bit of xylo action too) It is amazing how much of a Beatles vibe one gets when listening to Mr. Partridge. I am going to go with Danny Partridge as the base artist.
AP – Now I know I got here after the base artist was revealed, but I was going to guess Terry and The Love Men.
While I have always identified as Team Colin in the XTC camp, I cannot deny AP can spin a great pop ditty. Actually a big fan of the Fuzzy Warbles series.
Raconteurs – Maybe it’s the placement after the AP track, but sounds like, save for the the whiny vocals, it could have been a B-Side from the English Settlement sessions. Perhaps another Fuzzy Warble?
