Zevon- This one’s a killer. What a beautiful, haunting goodbye. His voice is a bit strained in the beginning (and reminds me of Dylan) but then he kicks it into gear later in the song. I love the gentility of the central plea…”for a while.” And all of the metaphors and imagery of hope yet inevitability. Wow.
DEVO- Quirkfest! I was digging the rhythms of the arpeggiated keys and then the vocals start. Kraftwerk of course came to mind as well as Laurie Andersen– that vocal has a pretty high pitched melody. Lots of juicy dissonance which meshes well with the songs theme.
