The Pogues – The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn
A jig? Makes me want to hoist a pint. Just what I want from a Pogues track – an irreverently good time.
John Frusciante – Anne
Reminds me a bit of Francis Dunnery and a little Tull. He’s a Chili Pepper of the Red Hot variety, yes? Nice guitar work. Veering into Vedder territory a bit. It’s like a mini suite. “So many careless angels responsible for me.” Kept my interest. Good stuff.
The Pogues/”The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn.” I am partial to the cold-open lyrics: “McCormack and Richard Tauber are singing by the bed …” Feels like the first line of a short story. MacGowan is a superior lyricist.
“Anne”/Frusciante. Love the long pause after the first chorus, I guess it is, and the big transitions from near-bucolic acoustic lyricism to folk rock and the squalling guitar solo. Disparate elements, but he makes it feel natural.
Pogues- Is there a more Poguishly Pogues song than this? It’s got angels, devils, punch and a guy pissing himself, all to the hummable tune of mandolins, flutes and a concertina. Lovely.
Anne- Full disclosure- I didn’t know anything of JF’s solo work, only his guitar contributions to RHCP. I was surprised by the raw musicality of JF’s voice, maybe because I never heard it before. And what a nice use of acoustic guitar. Some very interesting melodic turns here. Of course, the scratchy guitar enters midsong. Very cool.
“The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn” by The Pogues: picturing a frenzied joyous frolic around the pub. This would be fun to watch live.
“Anne” by John Frusciante: felt like someone singing in a stage play for the first half. As the guitar picked up so did my interest and by final quarter with the riffing it took off.. Well Done

I need to listen to the Pogues more.
Frusciante – My favorite solo album of his. He apparently recorded this in his home. Some of his other work is interesting, but hard to get through.
