JB – interesting. What big game happens on saturday? I wouldn’t know, then he wants to be a bull fighter, near the end he’s a killing machine, then the band runs out of lyrics and the song kind of just ends… that’s it, that’s all I got.
NkTr – Love the instrumental section, especially the horns, has a nice Funk to it. I can hear this in the background of a 70’s early 80’s detective tv show.
Judybats – Saturday
The selector of this track and I are among the elite audience of fans of this group. This track has a lush, playful quality. No uncharted territory really, a man stuck, but dreaming – yet, I really love all the touches and jangles here. Familiar sound, but it’s all Judybats.
Nektar – Nelly the Elephant
More playfulness. Bounces along and provides a soundscape for some guitar exploration/freakout.
“Saturday”/The Judybats. They go back a ways — a college roomie of mine was into them — but I haven’t kept up so it’s interesting to re-encounter ’em here. A good indie-rock track about a life that’s a bit quiet desperation and a bit Walter Mitty-esque dreaming. A matador, of all things! The encounter with the old grade-school classmate at the convenience story is elliptically intriguing. Poignant.
“Nelly The Elephant”/Nektar. A circus story told perhaps in the style of Sly and the Family Stone. Basically an instrumental with some German-accented ringmastery recitative. The elephant is summoned sonically by that swooping bass, I think, mimicking a trumpeting (though there is a “real” elephant sound in there too). A novel diversion; I can almost smell the hay.
“Saturday” by Judybats: I think I had a TDK of the Judybats way back or they were on a compilation tape. Always loved Native Son. This song is not as good as Native song but it did bring their vibe back to my ears front and center and I smiled. The vocalist can bring a lift to a song in a very cool/distinctive way
“Nelly the Elephant” by Nektar: This one scratched my itch tonight for music a bit out in left field with an Elephant no less. Excellent Track.
