Borrowing from the old fox-and-crow tale, …they turn a simple animal story into something about ego, temptation, performance, and wanting what someone else has. Feels a little strange, a little playful, and led me on a fine journey all the way through.

Classic early X, with that relentless primitive guitar riff and those rough harmonies I just dig. “She loves her mate as he loves her.” Also love the rhythmic shifts for the different parts of the song (especially the one that comes in with “At daybreak I roam …”).

“Dog Days are Over” by Florence and the Machine

I realize this is a fairly popular song though one of the gifts of the MyFive experience is really listening to these types of songs closely (I almost submitted “Muskrat Love”). Florence’s vocal performance is off the charts here, balancing restraint and wildness. The drums are insistent, persistent and drive everything which is mirrored in the lyrics exhorting us to “run fast.”

“I Like Birds” by Eels

Not sure who turned me on to Eels. Might have been a review of, or an appearance on a top album list by, Electroschock Blues – which contained the hit “Novocane for the Soul”. This track is off my favorite album of theirs – Daisies of the Galaxy. It’s catchy & quirky.
