“Sheila” by Morphine

Cure for pain in an excellent album. probably my favorite of theirs.

“Do You Remember Walter” by The Kinks
Submitted by Bill

I recall as a college sophomore discovering the deep Kinks catalogue and really being struck by this song (and album, “Village Green Preservation Society”). Amazing tune about the melancholy afterlife of childhood friendships. We all, perhaps, remember a Walter. Also love the clean, sparse production on this 1969 album.

“Elizabeth” by The Lottery Winners
Submitted by Alan

I happened upon this band a couple of years ago and really enjoy their poppy and playful sensibility. This one is particularly enjoyable as my wife’s name is Elizabeth and I queue it up as the first song when we take car trips (and other times we drive somewhere). The lyrics are a bit melancholy (spoiler alert: Elizabeth leaves) but I just focus on the poppy chorus.

“James K. Polk” by They Might Be Giants
Submitted by Dave

Interesting….is that an accordion and a theremin in the same song? TMBG signature sound. The word “witty” pervades this band’s style. All you ever wanted to know about President Polk in one song.

“I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape” by The Times

The title has always stuck with me from a song I always enjoyed hearing. Perfect for this round.
