SB- What is this stick he keeps coming across? Like the piano, Not sure if that’s auto tune or layering in the chorus, I think it would be better without. The song is very basic and stands o nits own. nice, simple, clean.
PJ – PJ was my “J” back in the 90’s. Not my favorite album but some good tunes.
Sparkbird – Silent Film
Initially, Coldplay. Oh, I don’t like the voice effect. Just not hitting it for me this morning. It’s fine/okay to my ears.
Pearl Jam – Rats
Good jam right off the bat – a taste of funk. Also not a favorite (favored?) voice – prefer it when he stays down low in a bit of a growl.
A bit tired this morning – sorry is this is all a bit grumpy.
“Silent Film”/Sparkbird. Nice melody, and I like it when someone is confident enough in a tune to keep the arrangement so sparse (though perhaps deceptively so, as the track goes on: It’s got bg vox, subtle strings, and ocean sounds that I assume are in the original and not just the vid). It’s a little mopey for me today, though perhaps on another day it might make me cry.
“Rats”/Pearl Jam. Starts as natural history, proceeds inevitably to social commentary. I generally like PJ’s sound and this is no exception; especially enjoy the rodent squeals on guitar. Pop-reference points for fade-out shout-out to “Ben.”
Sparkbird-
It starts off metronomic.
I like the repetitveness, reminds me of Steven Reich who I mentioned here before.
I don’t like the autotuning.
I was half-expecting and dreading a big, dynamic ending and I’m not sure if I’m glad it didn’t happen or not. I don’t feel like the song really went anywhere.
Rats- Beautiful fretless bass sound along with a sweet drum part and Eddie’s groovy, funky parsing of the lyrics. I was hoping they’d get through the song without referencing the title in a very Led Zeppelinesque manner, but alas. Those Rat movies- Ben and Williard- sleeved me out as a kid.
“Rats” by Pearl Jam: When this started I did a double take thinking it was Dave Matthews or he was singing with Dave Matthews. Not bad; some excellent guitar riffing. A bit middle of the road to my ears but in the freshly paved, good ride part of the middle.
