“Riding on the Back” by Francis Dunnery
Submitted by Ed

Remembering hearing/reading about this album and how FD was enamored with Genesis’ Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. You can hear sonic references throughout. I think I first heard “My Own Reality” on ‘XPN and it blew me away. This one has a bit of Van Morrison swing with flute. “She was a painter and he was a turpentine seller.” Bright and brassy – love it!

“The Ol’ Diamondback Sturgeon” by Primus

Primus could probably meet the 5 song requirement here about animals. I went with this one because its a little less known.

“Street Rat” by Blondshell
Submitted by Dave

not literally about a rat at all. The “street rat” image feels like a measure of self-disgust — “I wouldn’t even feed this to a street rat” ….something you know is bad for you. The track captured me.

“Down by the Water” by PJ Harvey
Submitted by Bill

Rare case where the song popped into my head for this round but I had no idea who the artist was until I looked it up. Eerie, unnerving and memorable, though the psychology behind the murder remains murky. Unusual in that the whispered “chorus” does not appear until the very end (though arguably there’s no chorus, and that’s just a tag).

“Cat with 2 Heads” by The Aquabats
Submitted by Alan

I am utterly fascinated with The Aquabats. They sound like They Might Be Giants cousin with a distant relation to Devo. Maybe I just like that they wear costumes like superheroes.
