MB-20: Never really listened to them other than radio play. IS this the guy that sang with Santana? Typical early 90’s music. Pop Rock I guess. It’s good but nothing I would search out. I think my clubbing days if the mid 90’s burnt me out of this style of music. Every live band played it and during the break, the DJ would follow.
This was a complete 180 from Mellow Gold, Slowly slipping to this more refined “mellow” feel. You could feel a change with Midnight Vultures. It grew with me. Might be my top album of his. Both Odelay and Midnight Vultures are excellent, it would be hard to choose between the two of those.
Matchbox 20 – Unwell
“I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell”, right? I think I know this song – let’s see…
Associate with Scrubs for some reason – I think Lazlo Bane did that theme song. It’s a catchy track for sure, but falls a little flat for me. Maybe it just lives in over-played land. Perhaps it requires a few more years of separation?
Beck – Already Dead
Get a good amount of Beck in my mix. Tend to lean towards his more upbeat tracks, but he does have a way with this spacey mellowness – this one reminds me of Radiohead. Also hearing some 70s-era Neil Young/America/Bread. This is taught – coming in at under 3 minutes. “Love looks away, in the harsh light of the day – on the edge of nothing more.” Bleak, but compelling.
“Unwell”/MB20. This song made me think about how various popular music styles (not to say “pop” styles per se) tend to overlap and converge. the vocal and melody of this tune for instance (though perhaps not the lyrics) could easily find space on contempo country radio. There’s even a banjo! The track is appropriately plaintive and reasonably poignant but I can’t say it really grabbed me.
“Already Dead”/Beck. Deep in the melancholy on this one. A lot more unadorned than most Beck I’ve heard. Pretty and pretty effective. (Also, wasn’t “Don’t cry for me, I’m already dead?” a Barney Gumble line on “The Simpsons”?)
Matchbox 20- I remember hearing this when it was released, in the heyday of M20. I did not remember the banjo at the beginning (2 bonus points for that). I’m not a big fan of Rob Thomas’ talk/singing. Not sure what it is. Appreciate the ethos and use of the term unwell; there is something genteel about it. George Carlin had a bit where he explored what people say when asked how they are (“Fine? Hair is fine. Are you fine?”). He preferred, “I’m not unwell, thank you.”
Beck- Boy, at the beginning I hear like 7 different influences–“No Rian” and Robert Plant come immediately to mind. It’s a bit dirge-ish. I’m getting rain. Heavy rain. I like more sunny Beck stuff.
“Unwell” by Matchbox 20: This sits square in that adult radio early 2000 demographics I think. Introspective and radio-friendly style. It is a good listen and I have no complaints but part of me resists for no good reason I can put my finger on….. other than I currently seek music a bit more off the main highway.
“Already Dead” by Beck. I know very little about Beck or much of their catalog. However, I almost always like what they do with a tune from a songwriting/arrangement perspective when I do sink into them. This one is not quite as unpredictable as some other songs I like. …but..still makes me want to seek more.
