“Silent Film” by Sparkbird

yes; you must know the backstory…..was written after the death of their pet bird Gabby, who was an African Grey parrot. That makes the title “Silent Film” hit differently: films are visual but silent, Gabby had been the “soundtrack” of everyday life, and after the loss, home felt visually unchanged but acoustically empty. This is one of those song’s that hit an emotional chord with me and showcased a creative moment fully captured (albeit a sad one). That is all a song needs to do at it’s most basic level.

“Coyote” by Joni Mitchell

“Next thing I know that coyote’s at my door.” I don’t know what carries this song more, the wonderfully imagery or Joni’s uncanny way with a melody in this jazzy style. You totally get both why the guy’s bad for her and why she’s bonkers for him anyway. I might have first heard it in her great live version in “The Last Waltz.”

“Here Kitty” by Sparks

I had known of Sparks before this 2006 album, Hello Young Lovers – I had bought 1983s “In Outer Space” with the Go-Go’s’ Jane Weidlin guesting on “Cool Places.” However, my fandom solidified with HYL – they even appeared on Gilmore Girls playing “Perfume” in the streets of Stars Hollow. This track finds the Mael brothers plying their quirky brilliance to purrfection (I make no apology).
