PS – All hail Ben Gibbard and Death Cab for Cutie! I’m a sucker for his songwriting and this is a fun romp. I do suggest the Iron & Wine version for a more contemplative read on this track.
Tubes – Sound very of the time. Also very Rundgren (perhaps due to his production?). My guess for the connection is XTC as Prairie Prince played session drums for the band.
You made me question myself, but I double-checked & Prairie Prince was the full-time drummer for The Tubes. Todd has used him for many projects and in his touring band 🙂
Postal Service – Such Great Heights
Not sure if I heard this version or the Iron & Wine one first – both are quite good. (I think this version was used in a commercial and the Iron & Wine one in the movie Garden State – a nod to our next round.)
Listening to this afresh, it is reminiscent of The Buggles and New Musik. It bounces and bubbles along nicely with the guitar riff placed perfectly to break things up. Trying to pick out Jenny Lewis on background vocals as I am a fan of her solo records and work on The Watson Twins stuff.
Got to see ThePostal Service live – at the Mann, looks like 2013 – thanks submitter! A good show, but frontman, Ben Gibbard, looked kinda goofy – seemingly running/jogging in place in slow motion as his “go to” stage move.
The Tubes – I Want It All Now
This one also bounces along nicely – impeccably produced and played. I may need to pull this album, Remote Control (1979), out and have a listen – “I just can’t wait to have it all now”
Also got to see these guys live – at Great Adventure, 1983 . Perfect as they were touring on the Outside/Inside record which not only contained the hit, She’s a Beauty, but also Theme Park – “spinning on the Tilt-a-Whirl, nothing like it in this world.” I think Fee Waybill did get into his “Quay Lewd” character for “White Punks on Dope.” (Seems like I was correct: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-tubes/1983/six-flags-great-adventure-jackson-nj-6bdb42f6.html)
“Such Great Heights” / Postal Service. Pleasant little pop tune. always fascinates me how it’s still possible to make a decent hook out of a few bouncy notes on a synth. Interesting rhythm track; is that a backwards snare hit in there? Base artist: The Department of Commerce?
“I Want It All” / The Tubes. Modestly rollicking track, with a nice twist in that the lyrics are at first earnest, then turn sardonic, suggesting that the “all” the singer lacks isn’t really all that desirable. For some reason I think of Todd Rundgren, not sure if it’s production or some familiarity in the tune. (Looking at others’ comments, I see TR is in here. I think the massed bg vokes are another trademark of his “Road to Utopia” style.) Base artist: The Cylinders.
“Such Great Heights” by [The] Postal Service: Death Cab for Cutie voice stands out clearly to my ears as well as the sound and textures. I am a fan of Death Cab prob to a fault ( a bit too adult/vanilla to many ears but not mine). I sense a band developing a sound here (so I would really be surprised if this is something after Death Cab…. but not sure..guess I’ll find out in your reviews or google it). This endears me to the song for that reason and the fact that it just has some creative “music painting” going on.
“I Want It All Now” by The Tubes: This song has Todd Rundgren plastered all over it. Reminds me of 80’s vintage but suspect it may be from the 70’s. This one is great production and really gets the head rockin and boppin . The song has plenty of interesting nuggets to discover and is worthy of more listens (so I just might go ahead and do just that)
