JF – This album I believe was the 6th one in Frusciante’s 6 albums in 6 months. All albums were recorded analog. I don’t recall how I first heard this song, but after doing so I had to pick up the album. Overall a really decent album. I have some of the others but I don’t feel they are complete as this one. I really like the lyrics, the time changes and the simple chords.
Roots – I really liked the beat in the beginning, I was hoping to hear some really jazzy vocal (Especially with Fertado) but then the rap started and “I lost the feel” I can’t say that I hate all rap. I love Cypress Hill, Tribe called quest, Run DMC… I think if the hole song was like the chorus sections? (the last part of the song as well) I could have liked it more. I think that part was well done. it was more of what I was expecting… the harsh sounding rap just killed it for me.

First thought is: he’s sounding a lot like Cat Stevens here, then: Live

Nice acoustic guitar work. Doesn’t really assert itself or stand out otherwise, but solid. Lyrically, it’s not quite connecting to/for me.
The Roots – Sacrifice
Remember picking this album, Phrenology, up at Positively Records in Levittown (which was still there the last time I drove by) – ended up being the “clean” version which was a bit of a disappointment, but only slightly muted my enjoyment of this fine effort – this song being a favorite. It’s got a great groove/vibe. “How we gonna make it through the dark? I’ll show ya.” – “You need a heart that’s filled with music.”
Another band whose catalog I’m inadequately versed in.
“The Past Recedes” / Frusciante. Basic acoustic arrangement is the bedding for fascinating lyrics with workmanlike vocal treatment. “I can’t play it safe but I might just in case.” Quite my speed. Love it. I would listen to more by this artist previously unheard by me.
“Sacrifice” / Roots. By sheer coincidence, I’ve been delving into (digging?) the Roots more the past couple years. Though this one is new to me, it bears familiar marks. Great groove, smart rap by (I asuem) Black Thought (whom one old-school hip-hop head I know in Pgh considers the premiere MC of the age). The melodic interlude — i know it but I don’t know from where. A sample? in any case, Good shtuff.
JF – Hearing the Cat Stevens thing Ed mentioned. On first listen, a solid track that would not be out of place on a local open mic night.
Roots – The beats are something I can groove to, Nelly’s contribution is solid, but I see myself as having to be in the right mood to revisit the track.

Love the acoustic playing, tones and the way the vocals, harmonies and acoustic parts hold each other up and accompany one another so nice. Really enjoyed when the instrumental kicked in too. Excellent Track and I also hear traces of Cat Stevens.
