Bill Nelson – Revolt Into Style
Love Bill Nelson. This is a taught gem – blazing along even without one of his signature guitar solos. Some of the touches may date it a bit, but don’t stop me from wanting to get in the car and blast it.
firehose – Sometimes
A band that I’ve sampled and have always enjoyed. This track reminds me of a favorite obscure band, Uncle Green. I like the big drum sound & ringingly strummed guitars and there’s something a little Talking Head-ish in the rhythms. Stomps along very enjoyably – quite a tasty track. I need to be more diligent in my exploration of their catalog.
“Revolt into Style” / Bill Nelson. New wavey workout with wacky, almost novelty-song-style middle part. Sardonic lyrics, what of them I can make out. Good energy, even ruthlessly efficient. no idea on base artist.
Bill Nelson- This one took me several listens to wrap my head around. Didn’t like it at first, owing to the herky-jerky chopping of the guitar, but that grew on me after several listenings. Similarly, the weird Andy Summers-esque riffs in the middle softened after multiple hearings. I couldn’t make out the lyrics except for 1965, music and harmony and then the title chorus. I ended up liking a lot of the elements of the song, though I had a sense that they could be assembled more seamlessly. It made me wonder if anyone had ever covered this song. I’m guessing the obvious base artist–Be Bop Deluxe unless, with a slight play on names someone is going for Willie Nelson. Doubt it.
firehose- Lots of treble on this one. Hard to make out the bass or the kick. I love me a crisp snare but this one was too loud. No idea what the song is about. A little too repetitive and rhythm guitary to make a great impression upon me. This sounds like proto-somebody. I think the picture on the album cover in the video is Bob Mould in his Husker Du days though this does not have his/their identifiable thrash. Maybe its the band Firehouse before they had “u” and felt confident enough to capitalize the band name. Or Toad the Wet Sprocket.
“Revolt Into Style” by Bill Nelson’s Red Noise: Sounds like its from the past but can’t place the timeframe… 80’s?. The frantic tempo and little nuggets of sound that poke through are so fun, I was doing that head bobbing thing all the way through. Enjoyed a bunch.
“Sometimes” by firehose: for some reason I am reminded of Paul McCartney and not sure why. Drum pattern(s) stands out and the way he belts out his vocals in the chorus just holds up the instruments so fine in that section…nice. Started to notice that bass cutting through later in the song. Another discovery..thx for sharing
Red Noise – I’m a Bill Nelson fanboy. I’ve always loved how his stuff sound retro and futuristic at the same time. This is very much of the time and outside it.
firehose – Nifty pop tune. Vocally i hear a bit of Adrian Belew. Agree with Ed on the early Talking heads vibe. Also getting a bit of a Drums & Wires feel here.
