Jack white – I was introduced to this song by a friend and have liked it even more. made me spend a little more time looking to Jack white projects. I always listened to the White Stripes and some solo stuff. It seemed like Jack was starting or supporting some new en-devour every week. it was hard to keep up, glad I got to enjoy this song.
Otis – Sorry, I only made it 30 seconds through this song and had to stop listening. I just don’t understand nor enjoy this genre at all.
Jack White – Love Interruption
I really like this track. Love the clarinet! Great use of the channels. Hearing the pieces just on the left or the right can be disorienting/distracting if not done properly, but the balance is struck nicely here. Not sure what to make of the lyrics, but the contrast of the verse and chorus made me think and want to figure it out – kudos for that.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – Otis (featuring Otis Redding)
I am more familiar with Kanye’s work than Jay-Z’s, not sure if it factored in to this particular equation. I appreciate the skills it took to piece this together. It seems like they took inspiration from the original -at least in sound, if not sentiment- and ran with it. Cool listen.
“Love Interruption” / Jack White. Really like this. Bracingly evocative lyrics really come through with the track stripped to the boy-girl harmonizing, acoustic guitar and a little spooky keyboard. Base artist: er, um, White Stripes?
“Otis” / Jay Z and Kanye. Some classic Redding is appropriated for some freestyling. Interesting production idea, though any thematic reason why the song is called “Otis” escapes me (the rapped lyrics don’t comment on the source song, far as i can tell). MCing over the actual lyrics of another song is a bit novel, and adds a layer of cognitive overload.
“Love interruption” by Jack White (Blunderbuss): Love all the pieces of this one. That oboe/clarinet sound is perfect, the accompanying vocal is odd…and cool; the subtle wurly a nice border all fitting inside Jack White’s minimalist guitar rhythms and unique voice….yes.
Jack White – I’m a fan of his many iterations. Had not heard this version of the track, but it is quite good. He knows how to get the sound he wants and delivers consistently.
Jay-Z & Kanye – Maybe the biggest misuse of Otis Redding since Kenny G covered Dock of the Bay.
