Recovering the Bass

Get-Up drummer Alan Schwartz commented that it was really tough to hear the bass (keyboard) on the clip of Fool Play I included in my Every (Little) Step I Take (Is Magic?) post.

I had to go back to the sketch track and figure out what I had played on the keyboard (as I hadn’t written down the notes – which Alan also suggested in a comment on my …Careful Notes post) then play it on the bass – with a little more feel and a few flubs heard here:

I’m also thinking “Fool Play” wouldn’t be a bad name for the album.

  1. Hazzah! Bass loud and clear now. With a clean, plucky tone to beat. Since you graciously cited my other comments, I now feel embiggened to add a few more. One is that tempo is fun to play around with. Even a few clicks one way or the other can make a huge difference. The other is to investigate the quantize function on your recording program, allowing you to line up tracks so that they are mostly (i.e. completely) on the beat. It can correct (though sometimes over-correct), for our human frailties around time. Onward!

    1. Thank you kind sir. I am having some fun and you are correct about the difference in a minor change to that tempo can make. I will check out the quantize function and will practice, practice, practice.

    2. The energy of an electron bound to an atom is quantized, which results in the stability of atoms, and hence of matter in general. Be cautious when applying this methodology to your music.

Your bass line sounded much better than original version in terms of clarity. I found the computer can sabotage even the perfect lay down of a track due to audio/digital latency gremlins. Quantizing can be an antidote but risk is loss of organic feel. This is always a case by case thing and an individual taste thing. I do quantize but try to keep the idea of “organic feel” always in mind. Happy Music Making.

      1. You have much wisdom and keen interpolation, but I have now activated ClearBlueSkynet to write, play and mix the entire record.
