  1. Kate Bush – Army Dreamers
There is simply no one quite like her. Sung and played like a lilting lullaby – a young soldier, a babe is lost without ever having a chance at life. Beautifully sad – a grim fairy tale.

    Jimmy Cliff – Vietnam
This didn’t seem specifically familiar, but the sound is classic Jimmy Cliff. A bouncy groove nicely juxtaposes this anti-war message. Simply effective.

  2. “Army Dreamers” / Kate Bush. “Like a chicken with a fox.” The lyrics balance the dead boy’s romantic expectations with the limited life options that pushed him into the service. But it’s the musical treatment that puts it over. That clicky little percussion thing is there from the start but by the middle of the song it sounded to me like a rifle reloading.

“Vietnam” / Jimmy Cliff. Coincidentally, I ran across this song for the first time just a month ago or so. We could have (unfortunately) done a hell of a round just of songs about the Vietnam War. This one is as deceptively simple as a koan, with just two relatively unembellished verses stating the contents of two letters, as related by the friend of a soldier. Playing off the burbling reggae beat, it’s devastating.

  3. Kate- A quirky, little ditty that sounds like it could have been recorded in the 16th century if the technology existed. While I love and appreciate Kate and like this song, I am more of a fan of her more rhythmic songs as well as places where she can showcase her range and expressiveness.

Jimmy Cliff- Infectious, groovy and silky were the words that came to mind here. So full of life and energy, belying the content.

  4. Kate Bush – Never heard of her until the episode of Stranger Things. No offense to the “Picker” Unfortunately I could not get through this song, Its just not something I would listen to. I tried, but just could not do it. I wish I would have heard the song without the video. That put me off even more. I feel like they tried and failed to pull off Tori Amos style.

Jimmy Cliff – The odd thing about this song is, if you don’t listen to the lyrics, it sounds somewhat happy and uplifting. however that is not the case. Its about a friend stating they are coming home soon from Vietnam, only to die before that day happens.

  5. “Army Dreamers” by Kate Bush: Love hearing song’s from Kate Bush I have not heard before. She is so oddly creative and entertaining. She seems to be gaining some traction with a new generation of listeners since the Running up the Hill song was revived thanks to Stranger Things. This song’s tone does not sound very war-ish but yet it is. Enjoyed.

“Vietnam” by Jimmy Cliff: gots that deep sax blobbin along just right. Nice catchy groove that gets you movin in place. It sounds vaguely familiar to my ears but not sure if that is because it sounds like a certain style of music in general (if that makes any sense). Very fine indeed.

  6. “Army Dreamers” by Kate Bush – The last time I remember listening to Kate Bush, she was singing about ‘Pi.’ It’s a very Bjork(ish) track. The complexity of the musicianship between the strings, chorus, and percussions is fascinating. While devastatingly sad, she remains short and to the point.

“Vietnam” by Jimmy Cliff – An interesting contrast between these two selections. Jimmy Cliff has a deceivingly upbeat hook here. The tale sung here is heavy. From a solider who was KIA just before his return home to his family and friends. It’s an anti-war message at its finest. I dig the organ that kicked in around the 2:57 marker.
