  1. Two unkowns

Kayak, quite possibly the male version of ABBA, then goes heavily prog rock. Some Dream Theater, then maybe some Kinks… Very interesting, I feel this is all over the place.

Billy Lee – Ah a little rockabilly. I guess it should have been expected with a name like Billy Lee Riley. This gets my “Bad Jam!” seal of approval

  2. Kayak – Chance for a Lifetime
I’m ready to hop on and ride this rocket. Just sprints out of the gate and goes all in. Too much? Hah, never enough! I’ll choose a window seat. 🙂

Billy Lee Riley – Flying Saucer Rock ‘n’ Roll
Hearing “My Girl is red hot, your gal ain’t doodly squat”. I can hear rockabilly roots here. Excellent. Again, a quick start and delivers throughout. Makes me wanna dance. I’ll have to settle for toe tapping as I am encumbered by a large black cat named Obie who has occupied my lap.

  3. Kayak- I will support any band that has a palindrome for its name. This one started out a little shaky for me, reminiscent of aerobics class music, but boy it kicked in after that. Aside from the great building a spaceship narrative, I loved the piano counterpoint section and then the sprinkling of odd time near the end.

Billy Lee Riley- Clearly a political rockabilly in response to an Area 51 incident in the 50’s, this one is straight ahead, old school rock and roll with a flying saucer twist. Never heard of him before.

  4. “Chance for a Lifetime”/Kayak. A lively enough number. The harpsichord (??) interlude had me thinking Gentle Giant/Genesis, though the guitar fills are very 70s blues-rock. Seems like the straight-up story of a dystopian outer-space hedge (a la “After The Gold Rush”), but reading the lyrics, I wondered if it isn’t more a con-artist narrative, like “Lizzie and the Rain Man,” or something from “The Music Man,” or “Monorail” from “The Simpsons.” It is low-key funny, after all: “You can even choose a window seat if you wish.” (Coincidentally — OR IS IT? — the day this round was announced, I was out kayaking (in Florida).)

  5. “Chance For a Lifetime” by Kayak: That nasal voice is familiar. This frenetic proggy paced number must have been served up by a certain myFive member on a mixtape in the past. The synth horns and the way the vocal pre-chorus leads into the chorus is very satisfying to my ears. At lot of interesting things peppered in throughout the song…a real sonic adventure. I feel like the tempo is a hair too fast and that just a bit slower would have hit a better groove pocket for me but all in all a most excellent ride. A need to pay attention to the lyrics more to find the “not of this earth” theme but confident it is there.

“Flying Saucers Rock ‘n’ Roll” by Billy Lee Riley: Got that scream going. This is truly classic rock and roll before WMMR claimed they were classic Rock n Roll. A piece of history and something to get the blood moving.
