You Name It – Name Song III

What/Who/Why

VOLUME 27.3.1

“Adlai Stevenson” by Sufjan Stevens
Submitted by Dave

I am often drawn back to Sufjan’s song crafting chops. His compositions are very well “put together” to my ears.

“Johnny” by Violent Femmes
Submitted by Ian

I will admit this is an odd song. We would listen to it a lot, Johnny is a live extra. not sure if the song is even on an album (I guess I can look that up) The lyrics just cracked us up. Especially the part about the ring and not really knowing why he is keeping it. I think we do that with a lot of stuff we don’t want to let go of for some reason or another.

“Oh Tara” by The Knack
Submitted by Alan

I simply love his album, the songs and the sound of how the instruments were recorded. In a previous MyFive submission I mentioned that My Sharona was one of the first songs I really felt like I could play well on the drums. This one has really nice harmonies and a catchy, punchy beat.

“What Became of Betty Page?” by Jeff Kelly
Submitted by Ed

I’m one of the proud few who own a copy of Ash Wednesday Rain, a solo project of Green Pajama’s Jeff Kelly. This song was the track that stood out for me and was one of the first I thought of for this round.

“James and the Cold Gun” by Kate Bush
Submitted by Bill

Not the sort of thing people think of when they think of Kate, but it’s a fave from her debut album. Jazzy rhythm with a rocking new-wave feel. Hook follows on hook, and her vocals are, of course, terrif. I am less crazy about the coda than about the rest of the song, but I’ll take it.
