“Mercy Street” by Peter Gabriel
Submitted by Alan

I almost cheated in submitting this. Gabriel’s ode to poet Anne Sexton. He does mention her first name near the end. It is a beautiful, atmospheric composition with which Gabriel is a master. His voice, tinged with longing and a slight graininess, is unbelievably expressive. The percussion is masterful.

“Shameika” by Fiona Apple
Submitted by Bill

Great tune (I think in rollicking 6/8 time) from the “Fetch the Bolt Cutters” LP. The record does it almost entirely with drums, piano, bass and vocals. Nuanced portrait of both the singer and the impact an apparently single school-days exchange had on her.

“John the Fisherman” by Primus
Submitted by Ian

Primus could have made all five of these songs. Just great music all around.

“Illya Kuryakin Looked at Me” by The Cleaners From Venus
Submitted by Ed

Had some homemade mixes of Cleaners’ stuff on cassette. This one always stood out – with a name that made it unusually qualified for this round.

“Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile)” by Van Morrison
Submitted by Dave

Soul-pop and oh so good. Van Morrison knows how to sing a tune. Love it.
