TF – I get a sense of 60’s British rock with a splash of the Grateful Dead (Have they ever made a myFive appearance?) Also a little Foo Fighters where most of the lyrics are just repeated, Not bad.
B – Again, I was brought up listening to Blondie by my dad. You can’t go wrong with this classic.
Teenage Fanclub – It’s All in My Mind
Very Byrds-like to my ears. A very percussive beginning pulse. Sneaking some guitar in after a fuller drum kit kicks in. Some dreamy psychedelia drifts in. A fan of the band – nice to give this track a close listen. It truly rewards that focus and repeat listens.
Blondie – Dreaming
You’ll find out soon that I selected the other track representing the band in this round. Know this track well, but hadn’t heard it in a while. Oh, that big, raucous drum beat. The lead track off of Eat to the Beat, the album after Parallel Lines, it really set the tone for a high energy affair. Debbie Harry’s vocals don’t carry this track, but remain a force. I think Robert Fripp had an influence on the guitar sound (he made an appearance on Fade Away and Radiate on the previous album – they even reference it on the lyrics of this track).
“I never met him, I’ll never forget him”
“Dreaming is free”
“It’s All in My Mind”/Teenage Fanclub. Yes to the ’60s/Byrds influence in the chimey guitars and vocal arrangement (the melody for that matter reminds me of “Bells of Rhymney”). The toms-heavy drums in the beginning were kind of VU/Moe Tuckerish. Agreeable.
“Dreaming”/Blondie. Might be my favorite Blondie track. Hadn’t really heard it in a while, and I’d forgotten the nutso drums by Clem Burke. The melody and multitracked vocals are ensorcelling. Love the spacey guitar, too — really gives it atmosphere. A true three-minute classic!
This song brings to my mind the band Sugar. The song fits the theme for sure. Drifts along in a rather pleasant drone. In a good way. The kick and snare came it later and felt good when they did. Harmonies were well done. Enjoyed.
“Dreaming” by Blondie: Blondie has been popular this round. Surprised how rough around the edges production-wise this was. Love the track.
