This song kicked ass then and it kicks ass now.

“Mind Playing Tricks on Me” by The Geto Boys
Submitted by Bill

This was among the first songs that came into my own mind for this round. It’s the only Geto Boys song I could name and I heard it just once (long after it first came out) but it really stuck with me. Qualifies as earlyish gangsta rap but an interesting attempt to deepen the genre. Great guitar sample, Isaac Hayes, I think.

“Wrapped in Grey” by XTC
Submitted by Ed

This, one of Andy’s favorites, was to be the third single from Nonesuch (they were apparently pressed, but never distributed). It seems to have been the final straw that led to the almost decade-long hiatus between this album and Apple Venus, Vol. 1. It is a favorite of mine as well – uplifting music and lyrics.

“Some Days I Drink My Coffee By The Grave Of William Blake” by The The
Submitted by Alan

I love The The, mostly from their early 80’s catalogue. Uncertain Smile made my first real college mix tape in 1983. I was psyched when they (i.e. Matt Johnson who is essentially The The) returned with new music last year. You’ll hear pastiches of Dylan, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen in here though MJ is his own dude. The song is a darkly, contemplative one, as much about the sad state of the world today as it is about the sad state of how the world has always been:
“Some days I drink my coffee by the grave of William Blake
Some days, when the hour’s past too late
Lost in my thoughts, where do I belong?
The London I knew is gone, long gone”
