  1. TA – I can’t say that I listened to Tori a lot, but when I do, I like it.

RLJ – The name sounds familiar, but don’t know this artist. on a Friday morning where I am trying to wake up this is a little slow. I’ll have to give it another listen during my relaxing phase of the day. I do like it though.

  2. Tori- Maybe I don’t notice it with male pianists, but Tori (and Fiona Apple) know how to play the shit out of the bass keys on the piano. So incredibly deep and rich. I have always appreciated her rhythm, her self-harmonies and those little musical pauses/breakdowns she does. Now, I may need to make a motion and submit it to the M5 council as I do not think that Cornflake is a brand. I did a lot of hand-wringing over whether to submit Savoy Truffle and decided no on this point. Can I get a ruling?

Rickie Lee- I never got the RLJ thing. Maybe I was too young when she had her big hit. This is good. Moody. Interesting musical landscape. It didnt move the needle much for me though.

    1. In a 1-0 decision, the liberals on the MyFive court sided with the defendant track. In the decision, citing Flake vs. Pop,
Bejzak writes: “Technically, the brand is Kellogg, with “corn flakes” being the type of cereal. Ms. Amos uses ‘cornflake’ as a single word. Common usage of the term cornflake implies one is speaking of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.

[Historical anecdote provided for artificial color]:
“The cereal, originally made with wheat, was created by Will Kellogg in 1894 for patients at the Battle Creek Sanitarium where he worked with his brother John Kellogg who was the superintendent.”

  3. “Cornflake Girl”/Tori. I don’t know that I can compete with the judicial review in this case (so to speak), but here goes. I am actually more familiar with T. Amos herself as a “brand” than with most of her actual music. Here I concur with Al re (or should I say “in re”) the comparison with Fiona, whose stuff I know a lot better. Similarly great piano, great jazzy rhythm, a very individual and personal feel for a “pop” singer. And I believe history will regard Ed’s ruling here as wise and just.

“Last Chance Texaco”/Rickie Lee. In a musical terrain recalling mid-period Van Morrison (a la “Almost Independence Day”). As with Tori, and despite the strummy guitar, I’d call this jazz inflected. I likewise do not know RLJ’s ouevre all that well (I am not even sure I’ve heard this song before, though I knew the title). I am partial to her slurry vocals and poetic gambits. Aside: “Texaco” is a word with musical possibilities; I considered for this round Springsteen’s “Open All Night,” for the line “wiping our fingers on a Texaco road map.”

  4. Tori Amos – Cornflake Girl
Hearing a little Kate Bush in this one. Know this track pretty well, but don’t know that I’ve listened to it closely in a while. Not only wonderful, eruptive piano playing and her signature vocal stylings – there is also some nice guitar and bass woven in this lavish soundscape.

Rickie Lee Jones – The Last Chance Texaco
Kind of a waltz, yes? I can imagine a dreamily slow spin around a dance floor. The sweeping, soaring parts remind me of Joe Jackson’s Slow Song. And then there’s that almost meow. As “easy listening” as it is, this is not background music.
