“Customer” by The Replacements
Submitted by Bill

Punk bands (which the Mats definitely qualified as at this stage of their career) frequently traffic in brand names, and in whatever’s bugging the songwriter that second. I like that Westerberg adds a level by having the singer’s motivation being his crush on the cashier. Great over-the-top Stinson solo. Brand name: Twinkies, etc.

“I’m So Tired” by The Beatles

These guys again? I love the lethargy and utter exhaustion that permeates this track. Pure John. The brand reference sneaks in as he talks the Sir Walter Raleigh cigarettes that he resorts to when he can’t sleep. **BONUS- At the end of this song there is one of the ‘clues’ in the Paul is Dead craziness: John supposedly murmuring (backwards), “Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him.”

“Give Me Back My Man” by The B-52’s
Submitted by Ed

Never really liked the line “I’ll give you fish…”, but it’s the B52s at their poppiest – off their pretty damn fine sophomore LP, Wild Planet. Try not to dance around, I dare ya! Ooh, oh – ooh woooh, oooh oh…

“Step Right Up” by Tom Waits
Submitted by Ian

What would a My five be without Tom Waits. Doesn’t mention a specific brand, but I think works really well for this round. I believe He did sue Frito Lay for using a song that sounded similar to this.. Not certain though, I guess I could google it.
