  1. Amy Winehouse – You Know I’m No Good
60s French Chanteuse first came to mind, but that genre tends to swing a little quicker. This definitely has the dark lounge with cigarettes and cocktails feel, but updated. Seems appropriate to say I dig it.

    R.E.M. – The One I Love
Know it well of course. Great opening riff and guitar counterpoint. A deceptively simple track that is well sung. Never quite knew what the lyrics were getting – love ’em and leave ’em? Great fire burning through… Top-notch ending.

    1. Maps & Legends came on in my morning mix and, to my ears, seems to be a slower version of The One I Love.

  2. “You Know I’m No Good” / Amy Winehouse. Ooooo, I like this. The poor departed Ms. Winehouse is big with hipsters of a slightly younger generation than I, and while I’ve heard only a few of her tunes, it’s not hard to see why. Brassy vocals, beguiling phrasing over one swingin’ , hip-hoppish track. Great lyrics, too. “You … sniff me out like Tangueray …. By the time I’m out the door, you tear men down like Roger Moore.” One just wishes the title and the song’s fatalist sentiments hadn’t proved so sadly prophetic.

“The One I Love” / REM. This is one of the most familiar-to-me M5 tracks not submitted by actual me. Always a fun challenge to listen to such tracks with fresh ears. I remember when this came out, and sensing that people (like people do) were basically only hearing the title in the lyrics and assuming it was a love song, rather than a self-critique. Probably that’s what let it become a big hit (among the band’s biggest?) Musically, I am noticing most how Buck’s guitars are a strong blend of the chimy and the riffy, with a concisely punchy solo.

  3. AW – When I first heard of Amy Winehouse, I thought she was some washed up piece of trash trying to make it into the music business by portraying an alcoholic drug abuser. She was in the news a lot and I have only heard the song rehab, which I thought was fitting. I wondered why the news payed so much attention to her. After her death, I finally decided to listen to (at the time) her second album and was truly amazed by it. It is probably in my top 25 most played albums. Every song is just amazing. Its so good that I want more, but won’t ever get it. She truly was talented and left the earth too soon. Its a shame that she didn’t receive the help she needed. She probably should have gone to rehab.

REM – I think I bought 2 REM albums, they were too mainstream for me, however I do like their music. This is a great song that I have not heard in awhile. Too bad I didn’t hear of this guys BEFORE they got too popular.

  4. AW – The Mark Ronson production on this is a great compliment to her voice. Don’t here her often, but enjoy her when she pops into my earholes unexpectedly. Sort of begs the question though, what’s more important, the song or the singer?

REM – The Voice that helped define the golden age of College Radio. Holds up after 34 years. I’ve always loved the way Scott Litt handled the band’s sound, and this track showcases a more muscular sound than before. Dig it.

  5. “You Know I’m No Good”:by Amy Winehouse: Great album; great song. This one hit the spot tonight. Her vocals have so much character and a little extra sumtin; I can’t quite put my finger on. Her conflicted troubled soul comes through so authentically in most of her songs.

  6. “You Know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse. Back to Black released in 2006? Authentic. The beauty behind this production is that it didn’t sound like your typical mid-2000’s album. Back to Black showed off her demons in a way that few artists today can match… A regret of mine was passing on a chance to see her play live.

“The One I Love” by R.E.M. Document! Such great “college rock…” Alternative rock before it became the trendy juggernaut it did… Listening to Document again, every track, you can easily hear the undeniable influence of R.E.M. to this day. Still holds up extremely well.
