Beck – such a multi-talented artist who is always changing. There is not much that I don’t like of his music. the other day I heard a song on the radio that what somewhat bossanova-ish… Need to see if he released something new or it is on an album I have never heard.. I thnk I stopped after Guierro?
Billie Holiday – classic, immediately made me think of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and how I need to listen to them more. (They had a few songs that would have worked well with this challenge.) Here is a link to the song that was probably inspired by Billy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2h9OaEQ06E
Radiohead- I know the band, but never really got into their music. Doesn’t mean I didn’t like what I heard, just never gave them much airtime. The beginning of this song immediately made me think of Bjork’s song “Human Behavior” not quite the same, but similar.
Beck – Lost Cause
You never know what you’re going to get with this singular-named artist – and that’s a good thing. I remember that our fellow MyFiver Ian submitted Odelay (his fifth[?!] album, I thought it was his debut) in the very first incarnation of this-here discussion group. I think I already loved “Where It’s At,” but really dug the rest of the record as well. Lost Cause has a bit of a haunting beginning and comes off like an acoustic, Andrew Bird track. “Tired of fighting for a lost cause” – one can sense the exasperation. A nice track (and I don’t mean that as faint praise).
Billie Holiday – My Man
Starts out as almost a call & response with vocal and piano. Then gets to a slow swing. She’s hopeless – Loving him despite all his flaws. Earnestly sung and uniquely phrased.
Radiohead – There There
Chose this for my yearly mix CD when this record came out. It hooks me right from the start. All the elements work so well together. “Just cause you feel it, doesn’t mean it’s there” – despair. Perfectly understated on the whole, it matches this rainy morning.
“Lost Cause” / Beck. Ooh, never heard this before but good one. I know only a couple Beck albums, ”90s ones, and this postdate them considerably, I see. He’s one of those guys who’s kept making critically acclaimed stuff well after an early period of commercial success. Wonderful folkish tune, and he’s here on the lower end of his range, sounding almost like the singer of Crash Test Dummies.
“There There” / Radiohead. Another celebrated band I’ve heard only a little of. I like this as well as most things I know from them. Love the beat and how the vocals ride it. The falsetto bv are killer, as are the murmured ones that follow. Love the fuzz guitar used in a laid-back way, as opposed to enabling a more conventional rave-up — though the extended coda rocks out purty well.
Beck- I would not have known or guessed that this was Beck. A pleasant surprise. A simple, meditative song. Pretty guitar work. His bass-centric vocal styling at times reminded me of the singer from Crash Test Dummies. My only two small beefs with this song are that I was hoping for just the slightest bit of variation in the melody and times of the lyrics, particularly in the chorus. And it strikes me as a song that could be a tad shorter that 3:49. Other than that, a fine tune.
Billie- Oh my god. This song is brutal. I know she didn’t write it but knowing what little I do about her and watching that heartrending performance, you get the sense that she lived it. It reminded me of two other songs. U2’s Angel of Harlem, a song directly about her, refers to her “eyes swollen like a bee sting” as you kinda seen in this video. The other song is “Better Man” by Pearl Jam, a sad tale of a women who settles. Billie’s song though is just dripping with pain.
“Lost Cause” by Beck: I seem to land on Beck when I am surfing Spotify or other streaming platforms and pause as his songs often grab hold of my attention for their inventiveness and creativity. I was seeking that when I hit play. This was not that. It was a fine song but my expectation out maneuvered me. Enjoyed it more on second listen especially the subtle air blowing over a coke bottle granular reverb and chorusing done as the song meanders along. Methaqualone vibe.
“My Man” by Billie Holiday: Not music I seek often but did very much enjoy the journey on this one tonight. Pretty harsh lyrics: “He beats me too, what can I do”. This man sounds like a real douche bag if you ask me.
“There There”by Radiohead: I go on Radiohead binges at times and then get tired of them. Love this song. I do know it and find it a fun one to immerse in. Great track. Great album. I guess I am back on the train.
