Bill Kirchen – Trying to Turn Her Memory Off
Reminds me of the Little Village stuff (John Hiatt, Nick Lowe and crew). Just swings – a great, sweaty bar tune. Turn crazy on!
Eva Cassidy – Ain’t No Sunshine
Liz and I first noticed Ms. Cassidy’s work when Michelle Kwan skated to her version of Sting’s “Fields of Gold.” She sings so sweetly and earnestly. It’s a bold move to cover almost anything Bill Withers has sung, but she manages to pull it off admirably. A quiet, coffeehouse version that is going well with my first cup this morning.
“Trying to Turn Her Memory Off” / Bill Kirchen. Good track on the country side of things (the title/chorus wordplay is telltale country). Actually saw him perform once in a little club here in Pittsburgh. Great guitarist, and love his twangy style here.
“Ain’t No Sunshine” / Eva Cassidy. Lovely classic cabaret voice she has. (Had, I guess; I see she died a very untimely death some while back.) Sweet acoustic treatment of a neo-standard. Love the li’l jazz chords in there, too.
BK – Never heard of this guy. Music started, Liked it, then in turned to what I guess would be considered pop-country. I thought it was going to be hillbilly rock, something along the lines of Samantha Fish. Good song, just not a style I listen to often.
EC – Wow, pretty amazing rendition (Unless she was the original). I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know.
Bill Kirchen- I’ll refer to the adjective “serviceable” in listeming to this tune. I can’t say I know what country pop sounds like these days but I’m guessing this in somewhere in the ballpark. The playing is fine and the lyrics have that wry, tongue-in-cheek quality. I think the vocal turned me off. Down-home is fine, but I found his voice a little tepid; more grit or growl, please.
Eva- The intro guitar chords are sweetly bluesy and jazzy, something that gets obscured somewhat in the original. I give her credit for taking a run at this one as its hard to imagine anyone topping Bill Withers. Nicely done. RIP.
“Trying to Turn Her Memory Off”by Bill Kirchen:
I resist country but over the years I have acquired more of a taste for it. This seems to fit a traditional rockin bluesy pop vibe with a traditional arrangement including the instrumental bridge right where you’d expect. For some reason I kept thinking of Kenny Rodgers and The Gambler for absolutely no good reason as any similarity is very small but that’s what happened. I am now playing the Gambler to confirm that. Fun Bar romp song but not sure I’d pause on it if I was scanning the radio for tunes
