“Metaphor” by In Flames
Submitted by Brett

‘Reroute to Remain’ was released in 2002 – and was a total game changer for In Flames, as they switched up and matured their sound without alienating their fanbase. Metaphor, while short, clocking in just under four minutes covers a lot of ground – and is a deeply personal track. Haunting, yet beautiful at the same time and [does] a fantastic job helping to bring this album to a close…

“Poor Poor Pitiful Me” by Warren Zevon
Submitted by paul

Don’t give me that Ronstadt cover. The excitable boy runs through a string of interesting relationships here.

“Trying to Turn Her Memory Off” by Bill Kirchen
Submitted by Ed

A man with a storied history that includes being a key member of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. I had the privilege of carrying this man’s amp from one stage to another between sets at the Philly Folk Fest many years ago. He was at times a bit defensive – when I told him I saw him open for Nick Lowe he corrected me, hinting that it was a show they did together, he didn’t “open.” But he was also self-deprecating, saying that you couldn’t do a whole show of Bill Kirchen tunes, you have to mix in some covers.
As for the selection, I just love this track. “Where’s that six-pack I just bought?”

“Ain’t No Sunshine” by Eva Cassidy
Submitted by Dave

Love Eva Cassidy and she just nails this interpretation of a classic. She left this world too soon.

“Lost Cause” by Beck
Submitted by Ian

Always liked Beck for his crazy out of control lyrics and music.. Sea Change however was a completely different story, sad and depressing. This was one of the songs on that album.

“My Man” by Billie Holiday
Submitted by Bill

He’s not heroic, he runs around on her, he hits her … but “When he takes me in his arms, the world is bright.” Approximately half of the pop songs ever recorded would fit the bill for this M5 round, but it’s hard to imagine a more transparently wrenching performance than Ms. Holiday’s expression of resignation here.

“There There” by Radiohead
Submitted by Alan

This tune has some of the expected Radiohead dissonance/weirdness anchored with the hypnotic beating of the toms and an acidic guitar part. Thom Yorke could be singing about ice cream cones and you could sense some pathos. But here he seems to be both lamenting and questioning his fortune or maybe frankly talking to his betrothed- “Just cause you feel it, doesn’t mean its there”.
