  1. Mekons- The right honorable BOD gifted me a Mekons CD many moons ago. They are on the edge of what I might typically reach for though genuinely craft songs with a heartfelt IDGAF ethos. The delayed string pick in this song is effective and troubling. The voices are eerie, haunting and fit the lyrics perfectly. **Extra points for branding using the first actual brand– East India Tea Company.

  2. Mekons – Brutal
Most familiar with their “Rock n’ Roll” album (another shoutout to our own Wee Willie O.).
Definitely some Nico energy here. Love the accordion and accents (e.g. hand clapping). Very hazy and druglike. Oooh, “tinctures” – good word. From tea to opium – mass opiates. Dig it – laying some truth down. Love the pause between “…built on the profits” (could hear as prophets) and “from the opium trade.” A well constructed and bountiful track.

    Billy Bragg – Sexuality
    I have the cassingle!
Ah, the seemingly elusive common ground. Accessible, poppy (dare I say playful?) Bragg. The bridge is scrumptious. (Aww, I miss Kirsty.) Simply great.
The video provided some much-needed smiles and feelings of warmth.

  3. “Sexuality”/B. Bragg. Bouyant and bouncy, and that’s just the rhythm! One of William’s best singalong choruses, and the usual sterling wordplay, especially lines like “Safe sex doesn’t make no sex, just use your imagination.” Never caught the “Mitsubishi Zero” line before, ha ha!

  4. Mekons – I LOVE THIS! I think we may have had another song from them in My5… Not sure, the name sounds familiar, but I have never heard their music. This really hits the spot… Need……to….listen……..more!!!

Billy Bragg – I’m positive he has been in a couple of rounds. This song works wonderfully well, Adding both of these albums to my play list.

  5. “Brutal” by Mekons: Here comes McDrug. The song lyric delivery is very loose. Lyric content grabs. Feels like the song may have been put together rapidly in one session. Here, take these words and sing them over this music we jammed to….oh I like that, hit record. This is not necessarily a bad thing but hit me as a distraction I could not overcome tonight. The accordion sound is laid on a bit too much to my taste. Overall, did not do it for me on first run through but will try again soon.

“Sexuality” by Billy Bragg. Billy Bragg, a popular MyFive artist. It is funny to see this young version of Mr. Bragg. I am used to picturing him as a somewhat blue collared, grizzled, bearded guy. This sounds just as I would expect Billy Bragg to sound with a somewhat popish lean. I like it a bunch.
