  1. RT – liked the guitar intro, the voice was totaly not what I was expecting… really low, like crash test dummies.. wasn’t sure if this was a “parody” type song.

OR – I don’t recall ever hearing of this person, but the song sounded really familiar…. then it hit me… there was a special on TV that had musicians singing from their homes… I remember this really young girl singing a really painful song on her floor with only a guitar.. I felt she was really straining her voice and it didn’t sound all that great. (I think she was pushing too hard) I believe this is the artist that I saw… but this girls voice is so much better…. I can’t figure out what that tv special was either… So I guess I will never know…. This is a really good song with a talented artist… I’ll have to check out more of her work.

    1. This can’t be the same song… looks like it was just released in January.. This tv special was prop early last year during first phase of pandemic…

  2. “Driver’s License” / Olivia Rodrigo. Contempo pop singer-songwritery stuff, confessional sounding, with slick-if-spare and very of-the-moment production. Building the song around the occasion of the DL is good — even if we didn’t see the video, it signals that the “I” in the song is a kid, one who’s getting her heart busted, possibly for the first time. Most painful and personal line might be “You didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me.” I can’t say I was truly moved by the song as a whole — it is possible I am a hard-hearted bastard — but it is well-wrought.

  3. Richard Thompson – Keep Your Distance
This album was my introduction to Richard Thompson. I was instantly hooked as it was deceptively catchy with 1952 Vincent Black Lightning and I Feel So Good. It was only as I delved more deeply into his catalogue that I began to appreciate him as among the rare iconic guitarists who are also outstanding songwriters. It is great to hear this one for the first time in a long while. This wry tale of an all or “none at all” relationship is a taught gem.
(Note: In looking up the track listing to verify song titles, I realized I had forgot “I Misunderstood” and “Read About Love” – a strong record!)

    Olivia Rodrigo – Drivers License
This is lush and pretty – maybe it sounds a bit too much like some other stuff that is out there, but it’ll be interesting to see how her career progresses and her music matures. Enjoyable.

  4. “Keep Your Distance” by Richard Thompson – Off of Rumor and Sigh released in 1991? For its ‘just over 4 minute runtime’ it packs a lot of layered sounds… and I thought I detected a slight trace of an English accent on this track. While this is my first time hearing Richard Thompson, it looks like he had quite the catalogue of music before the 90’s. Even though Keep Your Distance has a VERY early 90’s sound to it. I like – and had to look up the lyrics.

“Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo – Is this one of our first 2021 releases (same year!) submissions for MyFive? From the album Driver’s License. Very enjoyable – and it takes you in a few different directions; unexpected places. It’s a stripped down track that isn’t too overly dramatic considering the subject matter.

  5. “Keep Your Distance”by Richard Thompson: This fits the bill. This sounds like a very polished version of what was probably a more acoustic driven song. Very much enjoyed the musical interlude in the middle that bridged the vocal work on each side.

  6. Richard Thompson- Forgot about this song. Great choice. Thompson has such a dysphoric, lamenting voice, it doesn’t take much for him to draw out the pathos in any subject. Love the organ in the background here and the middle break with the [whatever that instrument is] and the brief slide guitar. I saw him just prior to the pandemic at a solo acoustic show–impressive skills on that man. Though I really like this full electric tune.
Driver’s License- Ok, who’s the young whippersnapper than submitted this? Amazing vocal performance presented in a very upfront and present way. Great use of dynamics too.

  7. RT – Absolutely adore this track. Thanks for including it! Really fits the theme.

OR – This month’s “it” girl. Fits the bill for teen insecurity. Heavy production makes it fit right in with contemporary radio. It’s not bad, but no different than dozens of others.
