  1. Steely Dan – Dr. Wu
I’m certainly a fan of “the Dan.” Katy Lied is a damn fine album. It made it into Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Albums from 1967-1987 (the list that spawned MyFive – https://preludin.proboards.com/thread/6380/rolling-stone-albums-1967-1987).
This track feels like a warm embrace or a hot cup of cocoa on a cold day – I just sink into it.

    Neil Young – Pocahontas
    “Paddles cut the water”
I don’t think I’ve ever listened that closely to this one (from an album that also made that Rolling Stone list). Beautiful and sad. I really need to spend some more time with it to unpack it all.

  2. SD – I believe it was Ed that told me “If there is a really good song, and you’re not sure who it is, it’s probably Steely Dan. I think Aja might be my favorite album of all time. What’s strange is that other than Pretzel Logic, I haven’t really listened to any other albums. (I have Showbiz Kids which covers most of their songs.)
Dr. Wu isn’t one of my favorites, but I won’t skip it if it plays.

Neil Young – I love Neil but my wife describes his voice like nails on a chalkboard so I don’t get to listen too often. There is a lot to weed through with Neil. A lot of hit and miss songs. A think a good compilation is Neil Young Live at Massey Hall.

  3. “Dr. Wu”/The Dan. I have always enjoyed Steely Dan but don’t recall hearing this one before. Classic Steely Dan sound, with those elliptical lyrics drenched in a kind of arch world-weariness. The production is always full-bodied; the piano sounds great. Bonus points for perhaps the only usage of “piaster” in popular-music lyrics (“the last piaster I could borrow”) (though it also seems like a word Warren Zevon might have used at some point).

  4. “Pocahontas” by Neil Young:

Kind of a lazy, meandering acoustic story-teller type tune with that classic Neil Young signature VOX. A fine tune. The bird yap sound was a bit out of place…made me lean in wondering what it was all about. I am still wondering about that and the Marlon Brando entry.
