“John the Fisherman”/Primus. Neat. Their unique blend of dissonance, funk and punkish humor. Even some metal in there, I’d say.
“Illya Kuryakin Looked At Me”/Cleaners from Venus. Ok, figured this had to be a “real” name, and I see it is from a famous TV show I’ve never seen, the old spy series “Man from UNCLE.” A little bit Squeeze, a little mid-period Kinks. Lots of going on, from the production touches to all the cultural references (Beatles, Vietnam, etc). Don’t know the band, but this is both evocative and boppy.
Primus – Joe the Fisherman
Always enjoy Les’ bass playing and the frenetic/manic energy of Primus. This one has a bit of a Hendrix feel. Dug.
The Cleaners From Venus – Illya Kuryakin Looked at Me
Another one that has that lo-fi/home-demo feel. Walking bass, very British – Martin Newell doing his thing. The break seems like the player is just hesitantly finding the notes. I find it quite charming.
Primus- I know Les Claypool as a super-creative bass guy more than Primus as a band. He was in an all-star group with Stewart Copeland- Oysterhead. This was straightforward fun and fun. Loved the wild bass sound and the grungy drums and guitar. Extra credit given for taking the entire band out on a boat!
Cleaners- Starting off with an odd John Lennon snippet is a good start. This song is steeped in Britishness wrapped in a poppy blanket. This lead me to read about The Cleaners who apparently suffered distribution problems with their music. Too bad. I want to hear more.
“John the Fisherman” by Primus: The bass is the standout and the color the electric adds turns it up a notch. Consider me hooked. Felt bad for the dude on his back (prob sea sick; I relate)
“Illya Kuryakin Looked at Me” by The Cleaners From Venus
The names and places abound in this song. I am not sure what to make of this. It needs more listens but is growing on me like a fungus. The out of tune upright is an interesting twist. The sort of thrown together tossed salad style is a plus for me.
Primus – Love em or leave em. I love them. Who would think a song about fishing would rock so hard.
CV – Yup i’m still part of the my 5 club. Ha! Getting a Ben folds vibe. also a little 60’s British rock. The piano is an interesting touch.
