  1. Of Montreal – Rose Robert
A little in the pub piano type of ditty vein, but is transmogrified using psychedelic pop trippings. Popsically transcendent.

    Cocteau Twins – Carolyn’s Fingers
This is prime Cocteau Twins. That Cure/Echo B-men sound with Elizabeth Fraser’s utterances and instrumental vocals – all seemingly otherworldly and trance inducing.

  2. “Rose Robert”/Of Montreal. A bit like the Beatles (or Sir Paul solo) in “music hall” mode. Jaunty and whimsical with, as Ed notes, psychedelic icing.

“Carolyn’s Fingers”/Cocteau Twins. What an unusually atmospheric song, in the contrast between the trilling, operatic-style soprano vocals and the clattering percussion alone (the rolled “r’s” seem to answer the hip-hop-styled snare hits). In the middle, that textured guitar figure. Quite an experience!

  3. Of Montreal- This is going to sound like a negative review but it is not. Maybe I was just not expecting the uniqueness of this tune, but I thought this was one of the strangest songs I’ve heard in a long time. It just kept changing chords and modes and left me wondering where is it going now. Totally unpredictable except for the jaunty (thanks for the apt word Bill) chorus. I had the image of someone picking up scraps of audio clippings from the floor and piecing them together in a random order. I’d love to see the sheet music or tabs for this. It definitely made me think of songs like A Day in the Life or I Am the Walrus. Color me pleasantly bemused.

  4. OM – I guess there is a genre of music out there that I am not aware of. I’ll call it the Ben Folds style, whimsical piano music. I do get a little beatles as well.

CT – Just started listening to this band. Might have been a recent My 5? or just a random song from a station that got me hooked. I really like them.

  5. “Rose Robert” by Of Montreal: A sufficiently odd song and couple. Prog-ish and pop-ish at the same time. Reminds me a bit of the Beatles mixed with They Might Be Giants. A dream like short story.

“Carolyn’s Fingers” by Cocteau Twins: I absolutely love this track. One of my favorites from this unique band. Mesmerizing
