  1. TLW – within the first few seconds, the sound was very familiar. I was hoping this was early 80’s maybe the originator of this sound, but alas, it came out right around the same time as the other bands that used this sound. early 2000’s? I feel a little Morrisey in here. Not a bad track.

TMBG – Ok, I am getting Ben Folds in the voice. I think the only TMBGs that I have heard was in my 5. Is that a Theremin?

  2. The Lottery Winners – Elizabeth
The guitar sound is reminiscent of The Church. They definitely have a sound that I associate with bands I think of from the early 2000s (e.g. Killers). Catchy. I can hear a little U2 influence as well. Fair enough 🙂

They Might Be Giants – James K. Polk
Just brings a smile and serves up a little historical snippet to boot! Sure does sound like theremin. Galloping goody!

  3. “Elizabeth”/The Lottery Winners. This sounds very ’80s in some respects to me, also, especially the big drums and that particular guitar sound in the opening. Good lyrics and a nice melody. The sound is happier than the regretful story.

“James K. Polk”/TMBG. Not only might TMBG be the only group who’d write a song about a fairly obscure president, but the inclination to do so is integral to their character. That’s what makes this funny. Also their love of his nicknames, esp. “Napoleon of the Stump.” The intro and break are very “Peggy Sue.” The detailed narrative tests the limits of the story song — lots of info here! Does make you wanna read up on JKP.

  4. “Elizabeth” by The Lottery Winners: Love it. Up tempo pop goodness…hit the spot tonight. A couple of bands ran through my head that I did the “sounds like” thing with as this played. Bands I enjoy a great deal too; The Vow, The Wombats and Sparkbird.
