  1. I get some Ben Folds here.. could be Ben pulled from this. Love the piano. I like it. I don’t think I have listen to a full album of XTC. I know of some songs, but they were covers by other Artists, Primus being the main one.

The, The – was getting Leonard Cohen, in this one. Pardon the French, but this song is F’n amazing. Tom Morello’s solo albums I feel represent this style, Ballady type music if that’s a thing. I’m going to load this album up.

  2. XTC – Wrapped in Grey
This one is very Beach Boys-esque and I love it. Hits me emotionally every time. Awaken you dreamers!
Note: Another great segue from this into The Ugly Underneath on the Nonesuch album.

The The – Some Days I Drink My Coffee By The Grave of William Blake
That’s a long song title. I’m a fan of Matt Johnson’s – didn’t know this one. It hit me as a very Leonard Cohen-ish track. Love the vibes. Didn’t realize this was so “new” and that the band had a 20-year recording hiatus. Excellent.
Note: Hit me at the end of the second listen that there’s an echo of House of the Rising Sun here. “There is… a house… in New Orleans…”

  3. “Wrapped in Grey”/XTC. Don’t know this one. A very lush melody and woozy strings create an interesting atmosphere. The bg vox are indeed very Beach Boysish. If you look in the dictionary under “chamber pop” there is a picture of this song.

“Some Days I Drink My Coffee …”/The The. Don’t know this fairly well known band, and this was not what I expected them to sound like. Yes, his sepulchral tones and way with a prophesizing lyric definitely recall Mr. Cohen. Love the combo of tremolo guitar, xylophone and snic-snacking brushed drums. One in a long line of songs about England becoming unrecognizable to its inhabitants (see Kinks’ “Living on a Thin Line,” Richard Thompson’s “Walking Through a Wasted Land,” or every fifth Billy Bragg song.) “This greedy unpleasant land” is a nicely barbed twist on the old “green and pleasant land.”

  4. “Wrapped in Grey” by XTC:
I often go long stretches without listening to XTC, so when their songs hit my ears, it’s always a treat. This one is more subdued than their typically frenetic pop fare, with a slow, idling sway that draws you in. The vocals have a unique, unmistakable character—truly a signature sound. Two big thumbs up.

“Some Days I Drink My Coffee By The Grave Of William Blake” by The The:
Wow… this one grabbed me. I need to explore more from The The. The songwriting and instrumentation compelling; I found myself leaning for more
