  1. Robert Johnson – Terraplane Blues
About as true blues as you can get. Just a man and his guitar.
Some mumbling, some sounds of exasperation – very conversational. Packs quite a bit into 3 minutes. Classic.

Gang of Four – Armalite Rifle
I kinda hear a little Boys Are Back in Town after the militaristic drumming. Very raw, ragged. Rapid fire guitar. Delivered in a matter-of-fact way that disturbs.

  2. “Armalite Rifle”/Gang of Four. From a band on the overtly political side of punk, a deadpan and ironic precis on the features and benefits of a favored armament of militias, extremists and terrorists. AR-15s are especially popular with mass shooters, of course. (Armalite is also name-checked in the Police’s “Invisible Sun”). Effective. Love the dissonant guitar solo. And of course the fairly heavy British accents.

    1. Terraplane- Always glad to see Robert Johnson show up anywhere, MyFive included. This is not my favorite RJ Track, but interesting nonetheless. It does not have as much complicated finger picking as some of his other tunes , though I found trying to anticipate the timing of the verses and guitar licks to be impossible. As stated by my right honorable colleague above, I found the conversational tone of the song to be interesting and imagined RJ sitting in front of a small, inebriated crowd a warm image. Truth be told, I had to look up the brand reference for this one even though I had heard the term innumerable times, as well as the song. Thanks for the new learning!

Gang of Four- I don’t know the GOF, though I am aware there influence. This is pretty straightforward punky, gutsy, guitar and voice. It made me think of drinking a warm lager at a basement bar. Mission accomplished.

  3. I believe a friend may have gifted me the album this is on many moons ago. The song is very familiar to me…..a stand out. Love the guitar work laced throughout this and the way it accompanies the singing. If the player is the same as the singer I am quite impressed indeed.

“ArmaLite Rifle” by Gang of Four: Super punky and very cool overall vibe. Love the guitar textures….the bangy bit is excellent
