  1. Weezer- I have an ambivalent relationship with Weezer. (This first verse sounds like G-Love). They surprise me at times with their musicality (their interest in and remake of Toto’s Africa is grand) but at other times they fall into a heap of other bands that I am also mixed on (see Modest Mouse). I guess you can’t argue with their sincerity and passion. I think I feel the same about this song. Not bad, not great. Saw them open a few years ago for Panic! at the Disco. They acquitted themselves well. Island in the Sun was well done.

MCC- She is a mystery to me. Related to Harry Chapin? Related to Karen Carpenter? Sadly, I think I get her confused with other women in the same genre. Pretty melody and chord changes in this one. Feels like an end of the night song in a piano bar. Should we go or have another drink? I can appreciate this one, though not head over heels.

  2. Weezer – El Scorcho
    The template for Beverly Hills?
I’m more of a Modest Mouse fan than I am of Weezer.
The intro is auspicious – we’re going to have some fun here. A little Cake-ish. It kinda falls into a bit of a droning sing-song affair. I was getting a little bored and then the change-up saves it. Off-kilter guitar part keeps things interesting. Somewhere in between a turkey and bacon for me.

Mary Chapin Carpenter – Where Time Stands Still
Somber, pretty. Her voice & phrasing elevates it. Chef’s kiss.

  3. “El Scorcho” / Weezer. Rock ‘n’ roll as self-deprecating comedy. or the reverse? Definitely not taking themselves too seriously. The gargling intro is inspired. Why’s it called “El Scorcho,” though?

“Where Time Stands Still” / MC Carpenter. Impressive. very intimate, like a lounge singer in a small club somewhere. Wise, mature lyrics and carefully wrought vocals; makes for a nice contrasting pair with Weezer! Don’t know her music much, but this was a nice detour.

  4. “El Scorcho” by Weezer – Ah, yes… Pinkerton. One of my favorites from this band. Definitely up there in my list of heavily rotated albums of 90’s and early 2000’s: Weezer (Blue Album ’94), Pinkerton (’96), and Weezer (Green Album ’01). Afterwards I took a break from the alternative rock scene and went back to full-on metal. El Scorcho, Rivers Cuomo’s gargling still cracks me up many years later. And I still know all the words. “You said you never heard of them? How cool is that?!”

“Where Time Stands Still” by Mary Chapin Carpenter – from ‘Stones in the Road’ released in 1994? Honestly, I’d have trouble pegging which decade this song was from based on its piano/harmony/singer-songwriter approach. Very moody, and atmospheric. One way or another, I think we can all relate to, “where’s that place where time stands still?”

  5. “El Scorcho” by Weezer: This has a similar dynamic and vibe to Beverly Hills. like that middle section and the quirky dissonant guitar plucks shortly followed by more of the ever increasing vocal angsty pleading..always something that rides the edge of being directly funny as opposed to in-directly funny I guess. I have several Weezer albums (at least two) I am a fan.

“Where Time Stands Still” by Mary Chapin Carpenter: big contrast with its partner this week. This one is not directly or in-directly funny. It sounds quite serious and reflective. rather, simply beautiful actually. moving (not my bowels, I mean emotionally)

  6. Weezer – Just one of those 90s bands I never latched on to. Lot of California bands at that time sounded similar. Smakcks of the “edgy” commercial radio station in town. My daughter is excited to see them as part of the Hella Mega tour (Green Day/Fall Out Boy/Weezer).

    MCC – Pretty song.
