  1. Bouncing Souls – Wish Me Well (You Can Go to Hell)
Didn’t know what to expect here – my premonition was punk-ska…. Wrong!
Maybe influenced by Modern Lovers & X type bands with a little of Blotto’s humor. Droll – lyrics are barely sung and dissolve to literal conversation talking with some nice crunchy guitar – gave me a much-needed smile. “What are you laughing at stupid?”

Death Cab for Cutie – Crooked Teeth
I like what I’ve heard from DCfC – they’ve certainly made their fair share of appearances in the weekly Spotified from Pandora playlist (listen for “Doors Unlocked and Open” in the upcoming “Carnival Atmosphere” version of the list [Spotified from Pandora] – to be released Monday, 6/21/21).
A nice acoustic version of this one, reminiscent of their own song Cath – and of the band The Beautiful South. “You can’t find nothing at all – if there was nothing there all along” – To quote the character played by Bruno Kirby in When Harry Met Sally: “I’m a [song]writer, I know dialogue and that’s particularly harsh” – depressing even.

  2. “Wish Me Well …” / Bouncing Souls. A post-punk breakup duet, lyrically in the vein of the Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York,” but with a four-chord guitar-driven approach, and more humor than bitter resentment. The girl singer is pleasingly Lauperesque; the ending dialogue sounds improvised. A suitable amusement.

“Crooked Teeth” / Death Cab. First thing I noticed was how much more attention this track demanded than this week’s goes-down-easy M5 partner, “Wish Me Well.” Rather more involved lyrically (“the state line felt like the Berlin Wall / and there was no doubt at all which side I was on”)! Second thing is the simple but effective strumming pattern. Third thing: “The Henry Rollins Show”?! when was that on? missed it entirely. A good sad song, nice pick for this round.

    1. Two seasons in 2006-2007 on IFC. I had to buy the DVD of the first season because I did not have the IFC channel.. Had a lot of great interviews and artists on the show. I think it may have been to “intelligent” for most viewers.

  3. Bouncing souls – this is an awesome song, never heard of this group before. Reminds me of a song I heard before, Christmas song I believe that has been banned because of derogatory language used.

DCfC – This is a band I would have never given the time of day, however while watching The Henry Rollins Show, I saw this performance and fell in love with this song. I can’t really explain what I love about it, its simplistic guitar? Amazing Lyrics? the accompanying guitar player? The setting? Something drew me in and I can listen to this song over and over again. I did listen to some of their other albums, but it wasn’t the same and I lost interest. Maybe have this as a My 5 category in the future.. A song or performance that you have seen that made you appreciate/pulled you into a band that you otherwise would have not listened to.. Unfortunately I used 3 in this category (this song, Amy Winehouse, and a future pick)

  4. Bouncing Souls- I love the energy in how this one starts. Aw, they tell each other to kiss their respective asses but that’s just not the sentiment behind the words.

There is a bit of a Dale Bozzio quality to the female singer’s voice. Ok, the little talky breadown in the middle. Not the usual vitriol. I am unconvinced of their desire to breakup!

Crooked Teeth- I have been listening to a lot of criticism recently that most popular music is spectacular from a production standpoint but utterly boring from a chordal/musical standpoint.

So, this DCFC song comes along in My Five (yes the song on 15 years old now) as a reminder of great contemporary song writing. I’m thinking here about the melody which is meandering and beautiful, shifting into high registers at times and then playfully moving to other keys and interesting chords. Very, very nice. And I had forgotten the origin of the title and was re-pleased to hear that it was not about someone’s poor dentition.

  5. “Wish Me Well (You Can Go to Hell)” by The Bouncing Souls – ‘Hopeless Romantics’ released in 1999 was the fourth studio album from this band… And this album alone had me breaking out all my favorite punk rock albums at the time. The mid-song breakdown banter only adds to the fun. And the album still holds up very well! Seeing them play live back in 2000: Their stage presence and energy was undeniable, plus their unique version of ¡Olé! got everyone up and moving!

“Crooked Teeth” by Death Cab for Cutie – Ok. I have severely underestimated Death Cab for Cutie over the years. And have not given them a fair listen – until now. From the album ‘Plans’ released in 2005? I’ve added the album to my listening list based on the version of this song… Stripped down, basic, but yet full of complexity and lyrics that feel honest – coming from a troubled place without sounding artificial about it at all. Wow.

  6. “Wish Me Well (You Can Go to Hell)” by The Bouncing Souls: Punkish song that kept making me think of Beavis and Butt-Head for some reason. The little banter at the end was funny to listen to. “This is me leavin right now”. Overtly funny maybe break-up song. I enjoyed the listen.

“Crooked Teeth”by Death Cab for Cutie: Big, big contrast with The Bouncing Souls. Always liked this song and have a soft spot for this adult alternative rock/pop band. Remember really liking Narrow Stairs and will have to fish that one out very soon.
